This is mostly due to the pickup more below , but the 2 pole bridge and the plastic nut ain’t helpin’. I plan on modifying my Bronco by adding a 4 pole adjustable bridge, new pickup, new pots, new jack and a new nut. While I am at it, I have decided that I will repaint the bass and create a custom pickguard. I needed to know the lay of the land, so I took off the pickguard to trace it, and see what the routs in the body looked like, I decided to document what I found inside the bass, and share it with the Forum. It came off easily, and I was able to slide it out without having to remove the ground wires. What I found was a generous route, the expected guitar pickup, and mini pots: Here are the electronics. The most striking thing about this bass is that it does not have a bass pickup, but a Strat style guitar pickup. The 6-pole pickup makes for a muddy sound. The wiring seemed sort of flimsy to me as well. The next two pictures tell the ugly truth: Not only is the pickup a guitar pickup, but it is a super cheapo pickup with two magnets along the lower sides of the pole pieces. Sure, it works, but that wimpy sound comes from right here: The second picture is the bottom of the pickup. Here is a close up of the electronics. The pots are K minis. Finally we have the pickup and wiring route. As you can see, the route is pretty generous, probably to allow for easy and quick factory assembly. I don’t believe that there will be any problem with changing pickups, or electronics. Yeah, I knew a guitar pickup was lurking in there. But this one is exoecially awful. I plan on installing a Danelectro style lipstick pickup for brightness, or maybe even an Aero custom 4-pole if the bass turns out nice. The route is big enough that I bet a Mustang pickup would fit. I’m not sure, but I think I upgraded the pots in ours. The pickup got changed out with a Seymour Duncan Cool Rail. Someone gave it to my son as a gift, but now only I use it for recording. The humbucker was a lot nicer and quieter for recording. Four saddle bridge would be a nice improvement. Intonation has been difficult on it the way it is. Steve G , Jan 13, Any rail pickup will work fine. GFS has a lot of good ones that will work. It looks like you might be able to put a p-bass pick up in there if you adjust a pick guard to suit. And while you are there i would take out those awful cheap sealed tuners amd put some open fender style ones in. Feine 83 , Jan 16, If you put a rails style pu, get the “hotest” one you can get and replace the pots with k ohm audio taper pots – CTS or equiv. Even before your bridge change, that will wake up the sound of that bass. Jazzy Squire T , Jan 17, Also, have a good copper shield in there too. I’ve found on some Sq Affinity basses with the carbon shield paint is that it is applied improperly and sometimes does not show good electrical continuity. Shielding paint has to be “stirred” before putting the brush in the can every time. The carbon conductive material is more dense than the paint and quickly settles to the bottom of the can. The route is indeed big enough to put most Pu’s in. Might be a bit narrow for a P-bass pu though. But Mustang will certainly fit. But, it’s indeed weird that they put K pots in theres with a Ceramic guitar pu. I’d say that if you swap the pots for K the sound will become more bright. And “GFS” is Guitarfetish. I have a “vintage split” in one of my guitars and I’m amazed by how freaking good it sounds A 30 inch scale is short scale and might not sound low tones like a longer scale bass. You might experiment with heavier gauge strings and see if you like the sound. YeahDoIt , Feb 19, Here is the tale of my Mods so far Thanks, your mods look really nice. It’s damn heavy, but sounds pretty nice stock. I was a kind of surprised. The stock Pu is ok. I have since replaced the factory strings with a nice flatwound set to get that “Tic-Toc” sound. Amazing, it does just that. Even has plenty of bottom. The Bronco will replace my “68 Vox Shortscale Viola bass, which is no longer up to gigging and the bronco actually sounds fuller and plays nicer as well. But, I’m gonna upgrade and refin it during the sumer. I will do a tummy cut and armrest to loose some of the weight. I actually think mine is Maghony, as the wood in looks pretty dark unlike agathis or Basswood and the black paint is kind of thick imho. There seams to be a red basecoat underneath as well. This is gonna become a “poor man’s Mustang Bass”. Since I have a few guitar builds done in the past, I’m pretty confident this will succeed as planned. A friend of mine has a few unused Mustang Bass pickguards, so I got that covered as well. I’m gonna make my own metal Mustang control plate or buy one, depending on how progress will go and how much money the whole upgrade will cost. I tend to keep the overall cost as low as possible, though But so far, I think this Bronco Bass is a winner! You must log in or sign up to reply here.
